Is It Conceivable That One of the "Fingers on the Button" Will Be Chris Christie?

by Norman HorowitzA few months ago, a woman named Gail asked New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, "You don't send your kids to public schools; you send ‘em to private schools. So I was wondering, Governor, why do you think it’s fair to be cutting school funding to public schools?"Christie’s testy reply: “Hey, Gail? First off, it’s none of your business. I don’t ask you where you send your kids to school."Yesterday, I was thinking about what he said to Gail -- especially his angry/annoyed tone -- while I was on a flight from New York to Los Angeles. I had 5+ hours, a laptop, and a lot of angst.  I thought back to a long time ago when Tom Lehrer wrote and performed a song entitled "MLF," which stood for "Multi-Lateral Force":

Sleep, baby, sleep, in peace may you slumber, No danger lurks, your sleep to encumber, We've got the missiles, peace to determine, And one of the fingers on the button will be German.

After watching Christie angrily replying to Gail's reasonable question, I thought, "How could anyone would want this quick-tempered person with his proverbial 'finger on the button'?"

When you look at Christie’s bio, you will notice that almost everything he has ever done was as a lawyer.I have been an operating executive at Columbia Pictures (twice), CBS, Polygram, and MGM/UA. For the majority of the time, I reported to presidents who were lawyers, MBAs, and finance people. There is a flaw in a system that excludes those who "operate" and promotes those who have been lawyers. It's difficult to imagine how Christie (or Obama, for that matter) can operate as the CEO of the United States of America. If I was in need of complex surgery, would I look for a bright and articulate person to perform that surgery? I think not. I would look for someone who regularly performed the procedure. When we as a nation are looking for a President, who will manage the largest "operation" in the world, the fact that we would even think of President Obama or Governor Christie "is a puzzlement.”
